Unit #11: Revealing Character Traits and Motivations (via Lewis & Clark's journey)

- Lesson 1: Revealing Character Traits and Motivations. Introduce vocabulary words to improve comprehension and fluency. Students will use context clues to determine the meaning. They will complete a vocabulary graphic organizer where definitions, synonyms, antonyms and illustrations are included.
- Lesson 2: Formulating Predictions. Use characters' roles on the Lewis & Clark journey. Students will discuss in their groups the idea of explorers and their personal characteristics. Students will make predictions / inferences about these "characters" based on information obtained in discovery boxes.
- Lesson 3: Gathering, Comprehension and Organization of Information. Students will research individuals who participated on journey of Lewis and Clark to verify predictions made in the previous lesson.
- Lesson 4: Body Map for Representation of Character Development. Students create a "Body Map" to show character development, incorporating a minimum of three quote sandwiches to fully explain their character's traits with evidence from appropriate text.
- Lesson 5: Development of Relevant Interview Questions. Students will develop interview questions for another character of interest.
- Lesson 6: Graphic Organizer- Compare and Contrasting Three Big Ideas. Students will complete a graphic organizer that compares and contrasts the two explorers' backgrounds, strengths and contributions to the entire team. They will select those felt more valuable to the expedition and be ready to defend their choice.
- Lesson 7: Culminating Activity. Students participate in a play (celebratory party at White House with Thomas Jefferson) in the role of their character of choice.
