Description: This lesson has been designed to serve as the first lesson in a series of lessons on fractions as they relate to parts of a whole in regions and in sets. It works on overlapping concepts separately and then brings them together. It has been developed to provide students with a variety of materials and activities to meet the needs of all learners. This lesson seeks to provide multiple means of engagement, personal connections, and access to prior knowledge. The lesson incorporates ideas from Everyday Mathematics, the Stirring Up Fractions activity from the Utah Education Network, the Why Do We Need to Know Fractions video at NASA, and NCTM's Illuminations web site.
