Goals for 2005

1. To improve science and literacy for children with an emphasis on improving inquiry and scientific communication using science notebooks

2. To nurture a collaborative professional community represented by Rhode Island College's Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, University of Rhode Island, Brown University, East Bay Educational Collaborative and Rhode Island K-8 teachers and administrators

3. To build science/literacy subject matter, pedagogical, and curricular knowledge of inservice teachers, principals, and institute faculty

4. To offer a 3-credit graduate course using both workshop/institute and lesson study professional learning strategies.

 

 


SLIP provides professional development to K-8 teachers and administrators in Rhode Island. The summer institute focuses on planning and implementing standards-based integrated curriculum. Professional development includes workshops, keynote presentations and mini-courses relate to integrating inquiry science with English language arts. The institute is held July 25-29, 2005. A follow-up is scheduled for November 28, 2005 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Location: TBA.

w To build participants' knowledge of integrating inquiry science and literacy
w To improve inquiry science and literacy through the use of scientists' notebooks
w To nurture collaborative communities among higher education and K-8 teachers and administrators
w To apply lesson study as a professional learning strategy
