Student Teaching in a Foreign Country

Student Teaching in a Foreign Country

(Spring Semester Only)

Undergraduate and graduate students seeking elementary or secondary education certification may be eligible to student teach at the University of Cumbria in the UK or James Cook University in Townsville, Australia.

The benefits are:
  • Learn about another country's system of education and teacher preparation.
  • Build a unique professional teaching portfolio for job seeking purposes.
  • Form relationships with college students and professionals from other countries.

RIC students are placed in a regular classroom and supervised by a professional from an institution of higher education. Each placement is preceded by an orientation program to acclimate RIC students to the country's system of education.

All RIC requirements are met as a result of successfully completing a student teaching experience abroad. Students will be eligible for Rhode Island teacher certification upon successful completion of the student teaching experience.

Financial aid is available for students participating in these programs.

James Cook University is a multi-campus university with the main sites located in the vibrant northern Queensland cities of Townsville and Cairns.

JCU offers the unique opportunity for RIC students to complete a student teaching experience during the summer (beginning of July to mid September). However, keep in mind that since Australia is "downunder," it is winter season during these months. Winters at JCU are warm since Townsville is located about 20 degrees south of the Equator. Student teaching programs are available during other times of the year as well.
