Case study 1

Mr. Hughes uses computers at both school and home. Last year, he purchased a desktop publishing program for his home computer. Other teachers are impressed with the class newsletters and instructional materials he has produced using this program. They want to learn to use it as well. Mr. Hughes offers to help them learn, but first loans the program disks to three other teachers so that they can load the program onto their own home computers. He then meets with the teachers to show them how to use the desktop publishing program. Is he in violation of copyright and why?

Case study 2

Throughout the year, Mr. Ricci watches for holiday specials on network television. He videotapes the programs and then brings them into his school, where he keeps a collection of these tapes. As the holidays approach, he selects videotapes from this collection to show when his class has holiday parties. Is he in violation of copyright and why?
