Black History Month is a national month of honoring, celebrating and amplifying the stories of our many black communities. It serves as an entry point for the kind of work that challenges the dominant narrative of black history in the United States. Join the Unity Center in supporting the many activities across campus.

Mission

The Unity Center is a department of the division for Community, Equity, and Diversity (CED) at RIC. Its mission is to promote the accessibility of educational services and the opportunity for excellence to all students through collaborative programming among its student affiliates, faculty, staff and the wider community. The Center further seeks to enhance cultural awareness by providing safe and welcoming forums for exploring issues pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Center’s objectives are to:

  • Engage students in meaningful dialogue about their academic, social and personal experiences
  • Challenge the stereotypes of racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and other forms of oppression
  • Provide support services for students in underrepresented and/or protected classes.
  • Plan & develop multicultural programming for the campus community

The Unity Center is comprised of the leadership and activities of the Women’s Center, the LGBTQ Office, and the International Student Office. The Preparatory Enrollment Program has been welcomed into our space and will enhance our student support work while exposing more students to the programs and resources the Center offers. The Unity Center student lounge has been updated with new furnishings, there is a private meditation room, and an academic resource area has been added to foster student success. The Unity Center, and the entire CED team, collaborates with Student Community Government, the Dialogue on Diversity and the divisions of Student Success and Academic Affairs to promote diversity, equity and inclusive excellence campus-wide.
