RIC Wind Ensemble invited to appear at band directors conference

The RIC Wind Ensemble has accepted an invitation to perform at the Eastern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) in West Chester, Penn., on March 12. The honor was extended based on a recording of the Wind Ensemble’s 2008-09 concerts submitted by Robert Franzblau, RIC director of bands and conductor of the Wind Ensemble.

Sixty RIC students will perform at the conference and the Wind Ensemble's program will feature several RIC faculty members as guest soloists and composers.

CBDNA is the largest organization among colleges and universities dedicated to musical excellence in the wind band medium. The Eastern Division includes over 250 members, and national and divisional conferences are held on alternate years.

RIC/Mt. Pleasant High School dual enrollment pilot program wins The College Board’s New England regional award for 2010

“Pathways Through College” has been chosen as the New England Regional Assembly Recognition Award Winner for 2010 by The College Board. The award will be presented at The College Board’s New England Regional Forum at The Sheraton Boston Hotel in Boston, Mass., on Feb. 9.

Last H1N1 clinic on RIC campus before spring break – Feb. 10

An H1N1 clinic will be held at RIC on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Faculty Center (located behind Donovan Dining Center). The clinic is open to all students, faculty, staff and family members over 18.

'Crazy Heart' garners 3 Academy Award nominations

"Crazy Heart," the movie based on RIC professor Tom Cobb's book, has just received three Academy Award nominations, adding to an already impressive list of honors earned by the film.

RIC President Nancy Carriuolo attends State of the Union address

Nancy Carriuolo, president of Rhode Island College, attended President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 27 as the guest of Rhode Island Congressman Jim Langevin.

Langevin, a RIC alum, said of Carriuolo: “Her commitment toward strengthening the college’s math, science, technology and nursing programs is exactly the type of creative leadership we need to get our state back on track.”

“Improving and growing our higher education institutions is a must when we think of training our workforce and preparing for the future," he added.

In Memoriam: Ernest C. Allison, RIC's longest-serving professor emeritus

The retired professor was the last surviving emeritus appointed by Joseph Kauffman, Rhode Island College’s fourth president. Allison died in Maine at the age of 101.

RIC receives Champlin Foundations grant for auditorium, lab upgrades

Young Memorial biology lecture Feb. 10

The 12th annual Robert M. Young Memorial Lecture, will be presented on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in RIC’s Fogarty Life Science Building (room 050).

Johanna Schmitt, the Stephen T. Olney Professor of Natural History at Brown University, will speak on the topic “Changing Seasons: Predicting Plant Responses to Climate Change.”

Schmitt is a professor of biology and environmental studies and director of Brown’s Environmental Change Initiative.

Robert Young, who joined the Department of Biology at RIC in 1970, served the College for 24 years before his death in 1994. The annual lecture in his name is presented to honor this much beloved educator, scientist and citizen.

2010 RIC Alumni Awards – call For nominations

Alumni Awards are presented annually in May to graduates and community leaders whose personal and professional attainment and service to the Rhode Island College and the community bring honor upon themselves and the college.

Candidates are chosen on the basis of professional achievement, community service, and service to the college or Alumni Association. Nominations and supporting materials should be sent to the Alumni Office by Feb. 8.

Prof. Tom Cobb’s novel becomes major motion picture

Cobb's novel "Crazy Heart" is the basis of a new movie starring four-time Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhall. For his role of Bad Blake in the film, Bridges has garnered awards and nominations for best actor, and the song "The Weary Kind," has also received awards and nominations for best original song.
