Rhode Island College is celebrating its 80th year of intercollegiate athletics in 2010 and will hold a major gala on Saturday, Oct. 2 as part of Homecoming Weekend to commemorate this special event. The event will be held in The Murray Center and will begin at 6 p.m.

Funding for Art Center renovation and expansion on November ballot

On Nov. 2, Rhode Islanders will have the opportunity to vote on a $78 million higher education bond referendum (Question 2) that includes $17 million to finance a major upgrade of RIC's 52-year-old Art Center.

Prof. Robert Rude steps down from Summer Literacy Clinic after 34 years

RIC’s Summer Literacy Clinic will begin a new chapter as long-time director Robert Rude will leave the program he has been involved with since 1976.

Jennifer Davis-Duerr, RIC assistant professor of elementary education, will take over as director of the clinic.

‘Sculpture Tour’ brings some impressive visitors to RIC

But this September is bringing a different kind of addition, one that will transform the campus into an outdoor gallery for large sculptures.

RIC alum’s battle to free brother from prison now a major film

Betty Anne Waters fought the justice system and won, overturning her brother’s murder conviction. How the RIC grad did it is now being portrayed in a film called “Conviction,” starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, set to open in theaters on Oct. 15. (See preview.)

RIC, PawSox pitch education on the field

It is a first-of-a-kind joint venture for the oldest public institution of higher learning in Rhode Island and the state’s leading news channel. For the first time in R.I., dial testing, a method used by national news media, will be part of the coverage.

RIC students participate in BEST OF RHODE ISLAND celebration


Rhode Island College students helped celebrate the BEST OF RHODE ISLAND party on July 28 at the Providence Performing Arts Center, where they greeted guests and assisted with the silent auction.

RIC researchers collaborating with Northeast consortium on genome project

RIC professor Rebeka Merson and student Mike Jastram recently participated in a five-day bioinformatics workshop at the University of Delaware, the first of three planned meetings to map the genome of the little skate, a flat-bodied fish with a slender tail.

The knowledge gained about the connection between biological development and exposure to environmental chemicals is critical to learning about some of the underlying causes of birth defects and illnesses in humans.

Fighting for a cure

Kayla (Prescott) Ranieri
When Kayla Prescott Ranieri walked across the RIC stage in May 2006 to accept her bachelor's degree in communications, her first intent was to work in broadcasting after a successful internship at a local television station.

But along the way, she answered a call of compassion, choosing instead to become involved in fundraising and advocacy for wellness programs, sparked by her mother's long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ranieri's communication degree helps her, she said, in the motivational speeches and newsletters she prepares for her clients.

Her mission is personal. Her determination is contagious.

RIC campus police fleet receives facelift, 2 new cars

Don Tencher honored by NACDA for third time as Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) named RIC’s Don Tencher as the Northeast Div. III Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year at its annual convention last week. It is the third time in his career that Tencher has received the award.

Viola Davis ’88 wins second Tony Award



RIC grad Viola Davis ’88 won a Tony Award for leading actress in play for her portrayal of Rose in the play “Fences.” Her co-star Denzel Washington took home the leading actor in a play award as Rose’s husband Troy in the play, a revival of August Wilson’s 1987 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner.

Davis, who also graduated from RIC’s Upward Bound program, previously won the Tony Award in 2001 for her work in “King Hedley II.” She was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe Award for supporting actress in the 2008 movie “Doubt.”

Davis received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the RIC in 2002.
