The Writing Board

Writing is taken very seriously at the College. In 1996, the Council of Rhode Island College established the Writing Board which is charged with the responsibility "to coordinate writing across the curriculum (in an advisory capacity and as a forum for discussion of writing issues)." The chair for 2002-2003 is Dr. Randy DeSimone. Two standing committee members are Marjorie Roemer, Director of the Writing Program, and Meg Carroll, Director of the Writing Center. Other members are chosen from Arts and Sciences, the Feinstein School of Education, the Committee on General Education, OASIS, the School of Social Work, and the Adams Library. Each January, the Board, in conjunction with the Committee on General Education and the Vice President of Academic Affairs, sponsors a faculty workshop which explores issues of teaching and writing. The Writing Board web page is currently under construction.

The Rhode Island Writing Project

The Rhode Island Writing Project (RIWP), and affiliate of the National Writing Project, is designed to improve the teaching and learning of writing by providing programs for classroom teachers to develop and expand their roles as professionals. Since 1985, the Project has trained over 350 teachers in the state, teachers who bring new motivation, ideas, and techniques for literacy instruction to their classrooms and schools.

Programs sponsored by the Writing Project include the Invitational Summer Institute, Advanced Teacher/Researcher Institute, and three Young Writers' Programs, all housed at Rhode Island College during the summer months. The Project also runs an annual spring conference, provides assistance for statewide writing assessments, and conducts in-service workshops year round.

The Project is directed by Marjorie Roemer and co-directed by Beverly Paesano, Dina Sechiro DeChristofaro, and Susan Vander Does. Lisa D. Narcisi is the Program Assistant. For more information, call (401) 456-8668.

International Writing Centers Association

There is a writing center on virtually every campus in the United States, and now there are centers in Greece, Hungary, Poland, and the United Kingdom. The International Writing Centers Association is the umbrella group for all of these. For more information, visit the web site Outside Linkhttp://writingcenters.org/index.php.

Northeast Writing Centers Association

A part of the International Writing Centers Organization, the Northeast region includes states from Maine to New Jersey. This year's president is Anne Geller from Clark University. The Northeast representative to the international group is Meg Carroll. Each year the region sponsors a spring conference for directors and tutors.
