Meg Carroll and/or the tutors are available to give brief ten or fifteen minute presentations. Although we prefer to have students come to the Writing Center, where they can see the space for themselves, we also go to individual classrooms. If you have some specific writing concerns you'd like us to cover, please contact Meg at 456-8872 or mcarroll@ric.edu. To schedule a visit, call 456-8141.
Tutors are also available to work with faculty on art and writing workshops.
The Center maintains a library consisting of current books on writing and composition as well as decades of journals (College Composition and Communication, College English, The Writing Center Journal, Journal of Basic Writing) which belong to the director. Faculty members are welcome to use these materials. There are also files of handouts on a variety of writing issues as well as current editions of texts used in Writing 100.
Sample PapersSome departments have been kind enough to send us sample papers for use in tutoring sessions. Models can be very powerful tools, especially for students who are entering a new discipline. If you have papers to share with us (with the permission of the writers), please think about adding them to our files.
We certainly want and appreciate faculty who encourage their students to use the Writing Center. However, we find ourselves in an awkward situation when students are required to come. In most cases, the major part of the session is spent trying to overcome students' hostility. Furthermore, when we are asked to write a note to verify that appointment, the situation becomes more complicated. There is the student's humiliation at being treated as a child, and the tutor, who must write the note, is no longer looked upon as a peer with whom the student can have a conversation about writing.
The Writing Center is fortunate to have a setting that is conducive to group work. We will be glad to loan our space to faculty writing groups. Contact Meg Carroll (456-8872 or mcarroll@ric.edu).
