Academic BackgroundFlutist Mary Ellen Guzzio has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the Bahamas, and China. She earned Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Miami, and received her undergraduate training from the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA). Her collegiate honors include the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in the Arts and Academics from NCSA, Awards of Academic Merit from the Graduate School at the University of Miami, as well as winning the 1999 University of Miami Concerto Competition. Guzzio has also participated in master classes given by Jan Gippo, Michel Debost, Kathleen Chastain, Ransom Wilson, Sandra Miller, Robert Dick, Sheridan Stokes, and Andrea Griminelli. Philip Dunigan and Christine Nield were her primary instructors.
Guzzio has performed with numerous orchestras including the Florida Philharmonic, the Florida Grand Opera, the Miami Chamber Orchestra, the Hollywood (FL) Philharmonic, the Winston-Salem (NC) Symphony, and the North Miami Beach Symphony, in which she was a featured concerto soloist in their Florida's Young Talent series. Internationally, Guzzio was the principal flutist of the North Carolina School of the Arts International Music Program Orchestra on their tour of France, Germany, and Spain. She also performed in Nassau with the Bahamas National Opera Orchestra and was the solo flutist with the University of Miami Chamber Orchestra's tour of Beijing and Shanghai, China. Other noteworthy performances include appearances in concert with Placido Domingo, Michael Bolton, and under legendary band conductor Frederick Fennell, and Gilbert Kaplan.
Dr. Guzzio is on the faculty at Rhode Island College where she teaches Flute, Chamber Music, Sight Singing, Woodwind Methods, Music Appreciation, and has previously taught Music Theory. She has also been on the faculty at Quinebaug Valley Community College, was a teaching assistant/lecturer at the University of Miami, and taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Session and Community Music School. Guzzio performs with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, the Festival Ballet Providence, and is principal flute of the Rhode Island Wind Orchestra. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the National Flute Association, the College Music Society, and has recorded on the Cane and Albany Record Labels.
