Providing Free In-House Services and Support for All Students

You can schedule an appointment with Health Services by calling 401-456-8055 to make an appointment with one of our nurses, nurse practitioners or physician. Same-day appointments and Tele-medicine appointments generally available. We provide primary care services to all students enrolled in Rhode Island College. We treat our students with a holistic approach – with an emphasis on prevention, risk reduction, and education to assist in making life-long health choices.

H.O.P.E. Line

Students in distress can call 401-456-4673 (HOPE) to confidentially speak with licensed clinician. This service is available to students 24 hours a day/7 days a week. In addition, the RIC Counseling Center in partnership with TELUS Health offers mental health resources.

Available Services

Current students registered for classes at Rhode Island College are eligible to utilize health services, whether you are full or part-time, residential or commuter, undergraduate or graduate.

For those that recently graduated, you can continue to use health services until January 15 for December graduates and August 15 for May graduates.

Additionally, those that are participating in an athletic program at Rhode Island College are eligible to complete the required medical clearance with Health Services.

We offer information on how to live a healthy lifestyle and encourage making positive behavior choices. We strive to achieve this mission by:

  • being a resource center for Rhode Island College students to obtain information and services needed to improve and maintain their health
  • advocating, creating and maintaining a community that encourages environmental, physical, social, intellectual, and emotional wellness to support a healthy lifestyle and encourage student success
  • creating and implementing health initiatives aimed to improve individual and community health at Rhode Island College
  • collaborating with students, faculty and staff, and other organizations on and off campus to encourage and foster health initiatives on campus
  • maintaining cultural competence and expanding the understanding of the links between culture, identity, and social justice as determinants of health
  • offering confidential individual consultation and referrals for students in need

  • prescriptions for birth control and emergency contraception

  • sexual Transmitted Disease (STI) screenings for all genders
  • pre-exposure and Post-exposure Prevention for HIV (PEP and PrEP)
  • comprehensive multidisciplinary services including primary care, gynecological care and wellness services
  • gender-affirming hormone therapy instruction and injection once prescribed by a specialty healthcare provider in the community
  • in-house lab services: pregnancy testing, blood sugars, rapid strep and COVID testing, and urine testing
  • East Side Lab Services: phlebotomy services offered, specimens sent to East Side Lab 
  • cessation assistance for nicotine products (JUUL, vaping, cigarettes) 
  • education and treatment for substance and alcohol abuse
  • staff provide education regarding opioid overdose and Naloxone administration 

Please Note: Only if students sign written consent, may Health Services coordinate care with other professionals. 

Health Services is part of the state-supplied vaccine program which offers free vaccines to most students.

Rhode Island state law requires that all full-time students, graduate and undergraduate, provide documentation of:

  • One Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) vaccine
  • Two MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines
  • Three Hepatitis B vaccines 
  • Two Varicella vaccinations or proof of chicken pox disease
  • Meningitis vaccine 
  • COVID-19 vaccine

Tuberculosis (TB) screenings are required for all full-time students. 

Medical examinations (physicals) are required for the following students: athletes, nursing majors and residential students.

Your Medical Records

All requests for medical records must be made in writing by completing an Authorization for Release of Medical Information Form. Hard copies or copies faxed to 401-456-8890 are accepted. Request for records may take up to one week to process. Please Note: Medical records are considered strictly confidential under current state and federal laws with only rare exceptions. They are maintained separately from your academic records and are not released without your written consent.
