A Designation to Set You Apart

The Departmental Honors Program in accounting is intended to provide exceptional students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills. If you successfully complete departmental honors, you will receive the designation “Honors in Accounting” on your transcript. This designation may be included on your résumés and graduate school applications. In this program you will proceed as follows:

Program Execution

Planning and Proposal

Before beginning your research and written research project you must:

  • develop a proposal to study a specific area of accounting, under faculty advisor supervision
  • have your proposal reviewed by your faculty advisor and the department chair for approval

Research and Project Completion

You then have two semesters to:

  • complete your written research project
  • orally present the project to the Accounting Department faculty, who may make suggestions and observations

How to Apply

Admission Requirements

  1. You must complete ACCT 201, ACCT 202, CIS 251, ECON 214, ECON, 215, MATH 177 and MATH 238 or MATH 248 (4 credits) and ENGL 230, with a cumulative GPA in these courses of 3.25.
  2. You must be a declared major in accounting.
  3. You must have a 3.0 overall cumulative GPA.
  4. You must have a minimum grade of B in ACCT 310 and ACCT 311.

Application Requirements

  1. Complete the Honors Program Application along with a separate statement on why you wish to pursue the program.
  2. Identify on your application the name of your faculty advisor who will supervise your research project. Have that advisor sign the application.
  3. Submit your application to the honors director in the Accounting Department no later than one full semester prior to your last semester. The director will forward your application to the chair of the department.
  4. Also submit two letters of recommendation from accounting faculty members.

​Candidates who cannot successfully complete the honors program or who wish to opt out of the program are eligible to complete the accounting major. It is also acceptable to change your faculty advisor, with approval of the director of the honors program.

How to Achieve Honors

  1. You must have a grade of B or higher in each course taken in the accounting major. All classes must be taken at Rhode Island College, including ACCT 311 and ACCT 312.
  2. You must have a 3.0 overall GPA.
  3. You must successfully complete a written research project and an oral presentation before the accounting faculty.
  4. You must enroll in independent study (ACCT 491 and ACCT 492) (6 credits) while working on your research project. If you plan to sit for the CPA exam, you should plan to add ACCT 451 to your program.
  5. You must complete all accounting required courses.
