RIC Second Language Requirement

All Rhode Island College graduates are expected to speak and understand a language other than English at the novice-to-mid-proficiency level. The second language requirement is designed to meet that expectation. This requirement may be fulfilled in any of the following ways:

By completing a RIC language course numbered 102 or higher.
Through transfer credit of language courses equivalent to a language course numbered 102 or higher from an accredited college or university.
Through transfer credit of a second language course from an approved study abroad program.
Through advanced placement (AP) credit. If you score three or higher on the AP Test in French, German or Spanish, RIC will award 6 credits (equivalent to RIC language courses 113 and 114).
Through RIC’s Early Enrollment Program credit for language courses 113 or 114.
By completing the CLEP Test in French, German or Spanish, with a score on the Level I Test of 50 or higher.
By completing the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the written exam for languages for which there are no CLEP or AP tests. Level: OPI (offered in 65 languages): Novice Mid to High. Written test: Novice High (offered in 12 languages).
By completing the SAT II Subject Test (scores vary according to language).
Foreign/international students may submit an official high school transcript from a non-English-speaking country of origin.

Language Placement

If you would like to take French, German, Spanish or Portuguese, the department offers online placement tests. Immediately after completing the test, you will receive a score and the number of the course for which you should register.

For Portuguese, visit the Portuguese Studies Program website, scroll down and click on Portuguese Self-Assessment Test.

For French, German or Spanish, get started here.

Enter your information to register and create an account.
Once your information has been entered, click "Create Account."
Once the account has been created, click "Sign In" to proceed.
Sign in using the email address and password you just used to create your account. Be sure to save this login information in the event you need to access your account again. You can log back in at any time at webcape.truenorthtest.com.
After signing in, you will be brought to your Dashboard. From here, you can select the language(s) you would like to take by clicking on "Take Test" and proceeding through the exam.
Once you have finished the exam, please print your results and give them to your advisor.

You will not be able to register yourself into a 102 or higher language course. Send a screenshot of your Placement Test results along with the course and section number you wish to take to the Modern Languages Department Chair Eliani Basile (ebasile@ric.edu) and she will register you.
