Rhode Island College was founded in 1854 specifically to train future teachers.

Demonstrated Excellence in Preparing Educators and Counselors

Rhode Island College (RIC) was the 8th teacher training school opened in the United States and the 1st public institution of higher education in the state of Rhode Island. Today, the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development (FSEHD) - now one of five schools at RIC - is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing programs that prepare professional personnel for educator and counseling roles in schools and social service agencies that serve the needs of the diverse communities of Rhode Island.

The FSEHD also serves as the College's liaison with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) and local school systems.
