Working to Build a Safer, More Inclusive Future

Message in support of our AAPI students, faculty, staff and alumni

March 19, 2021

Dear RIC Campus Community,

The anti-Asian violence we witnessed in Atlanta this week has shaken all of us - especially our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities at RIC. While heartbreaking, this act of hatred is not isolated or unpredictable nor is it acceptable in today’s society. Reports of anti-Asian violence and discrimination have risen dramatically across the country since the Covid-19 pandemic began last March. Though acts of violence against racially marginalized groups by the intolerant and abhorrent continue to threaten our feelings of safety and belonging, RIC stands in solidarity with our AAPI friends, families, and neighbors across our state and the country at large.

We are here to offer support not only in the form of words, but also action. Please note that the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion holds the Office of Institutional Equity and the newly implemented Bias Incident Response process. Members of the campus community are encouraged to share their experiences of bias here. You may also find support in connecting with our friends at the Unity Center. The HOPE team and Counseling Center are also available to assist members of our campus community experiencing crisis.

To our AAPI students, faculty, staff, and alum: you are valued, you are important, you are loved, and you are not alone. We stand united with you during this time of loss, grief, fear, and exasperation. We believe in a vision where every member of our diverse community feels safe and secure, and we promise to continue working to build a safer, more inclusive future.
