English Scholarships and Awards
Each year the English Department offers a number of scholarships and awards to students.
Amy Thompson Memorial Award
One cash award is given to a student for work in children's literature.
Donald F. Lyons Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior English major who plans to enter teaching and who qualifies for financial aid.
Ducey Awards
Multiple Ducey Awards are given each year to recognize substantial achievement by English majors. Students are nominated by professors and award amounts vary depending on the level of financial need as determined by the college's Financial Aid Office.
English Faculty Writing Scholarship
Two English Faculty Writing Scholarships are awarded to English majors who have at least sophomore standing and who have submitted portfolios of critical or creative writing and won the annual competition.
Graduate Assistantships
Tuition and a stipend is awarded each year to a graduate student in English.
Jean Garrigue Award
This cash award is given to a graduating senior majoring in English who has submitted a portfolio of creative writing and won the annual competition.
Jennifer S. Cook Award
This cash award is given to a graduating English/education major who embodies the characteristics of a teacher as demonstrated by Professor Jennifer Cook, a revolutionary teacher and writer who saw her work as a calling.
John J. Salesses Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an English major of at least junior standing whose focus is British or American literature and who has a G.P.A. of at least 3.0.
Spencer and Marguerite Hall Award
This cash award is given to a graduating senior majoring in English who has exhibited exemplary scholarship and leadership within the English Department.
