When to Register

Priority Registration as a Current Student

Current RIC students are the first to register for each session, during these two time periods:

  • Session I: February 20 - May 19 
  • Session II: February 20 - June 30 

The registration system is available from 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily.

How to Find the Right Course

Finding the Courses You'll Register for on MyRIC

While the undergraduate and graduate class schedules give you a sense of what is being offered and when, MyRIC will provide you with course descriptions to help you decide what to register for:

  1. Go to MyRIC and access your account by entering your user ID and password (all lowercase). Students who require assistance with accessing online registration should contact the Disability Services Center at 401-456-2776. If you forgot your ID or password or have trouble accessing your account, contact the Records Office at 401-456-8213.
  2. To locate and look through course(s) navigate from the RIC Announcements page to the RIC Student Homepage (using the top, left drop-down menu). Then click on Student Center > Search for Classes button.

Call/Class Numbers

Call/class numbers are the five-digit number preceding each course and are very important for these reasons:

  • this is the number you will need in order to register for, add, or drop a given course
  • clicking on a call number will provide you with the course description

Also, if a course has multiple sections, please note the unique section number. You may not register for more than one section of a course.

Departmental Consent

Some courses require departmental consent to enroll. These courses are identified in Class Search on the Class Details page with the phrase "Department Consent Required." A course may have this designation for reasons such as: minimum grade point average, earned credits, major, or permission of department chair. Contact the offering department for registration information.

College Catalog 

The college catalog contains degree requirements for all undergraduate programs of study, rules that affect students, descriptions of courses, and a list of the faculty and administration of the college. You must know the rules given in the catalog for your degree program. The catalog is the document of authority for all students. 

Where and How to Register

Registering for Summer Classes on MyRIC 

  1. Go to MyRIC and access your account by entering your user ID and password (all lowercase).   2. To begin the registration process navigate from the RIC Announcements page to the RIC Student Homepage (using the top, left drop-down menu). Then click on Student Center > select Enroll from the left-hand navigation
  3. Please be sure to avoid course meeting times that conflict with each other

Please note: As a current RIC student you will register first for Session I courses, starting on February 20.

Add/Drop Dates and Course Loads

Summer Session I

  • May 15: classes begin and add/drop period begins
  • May 19: add/drop period ends
  • June 2: last day to withdraw from courses without permission

Summer Session II

  • June 26: classes begin and add/drop period begins
  • June 30: add/drop period ends
  • July 14: last day to withdraw from courses without permission

Undergraduate Course Load

The maximum course load during the summer is 8 credit hours per summer session. Any exception to the maximum course load policy must be approved in writing by the appropriate academic dean. 

Graduate Course Load

The maximum course load during the summer is 8 credit hours per summer session. Students holding appointments as graduate assistance or graduate research assistants are considered full-time students, but must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits each semester or 6 credits in any one summer session. 

Understanding Our Course Numbering System

Course Numbers Description
000-009 Noncredit Courses
100-199 Introductory and General Education courses normally taken during the first and second year
200-299 Other lower-division courses and General Education courses
300-399 Courses taken by undergraduate students who have met the prerequisite(s). These courses are not accepted for credit toward graduate degrees
400-499 Courses normally taken in the junior and senior years. These courses are open to graduate students for credit towards a graduate degree. The number of credits acceptable in a graduate program is limited by graduate program policies
500-599 Courses open to graduate students. Normally these courses require a bachelor's degree as a prerequisite. In certain circumstances, qualified students who have earned at least 90 credit hours may be admitted, with permission of the instructor and the appropriate dean 
600-699 Courses open to graduate and doctoral students only
700-799 Courses open to graduate and doctoral students only

Summer 2023 Tuition & Fees

You will be assessed tuition and fees based on your student category and residence. If your permanent residence for over one year has been Rhode Island, you may apply for in-state status at the Records Office in Building 4. In addition, to be considered independent of your parents, you must not have been claimed as a dependent for tax purposes for two years and you must have resided in Rhode Island for at least one year. It is your responsibility to inform the College of your status so that you are correctly charged.

All non-degree (not yet admitted to a degree program) students, undergraduate and graduate, are assessed tuition charges based on the course level. Undergraduate courses are billed at the undergraduate rate and graduate courses are billed at the graduate rate.

Please note: Rhode Island College is a state-supported institution; therefore, tuition and fees are subject to change at any time by the action of the Board of Education.

* Northeast Neighbors: If you are one of our Northeast Neighbors and you live in Connecticut, Long Island, Metro New York City, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire or Vermont, you could qualify for a specific tuition rate* that is more affordable than the tuition at your local state college or university. 

Doctoral Programs

You may make payment by cash, check or electronic check, or by credit card using American Express, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. Credit card payments are only accepted on line and will have a convenience fee of 2.75% added to each card transaction. There is no fee for electronic check processing. For degree students, financial aid that has been offered and that you have accepted may also be applied to your bill. You will be required to pay any difference that is due.

If you register for summer courses after ?, you are expected to make payment prior to classes beginning for the session. It is your responsibility to make certain that your registration accurately reflects your enrollment intentions for the semester. Since bills are based upon enrolled credits, you should drop unwanted courses as soon as possible. If you have questions regarding payment call the Bursar’s Office at 401-456-8130.

E-Billing

Electronic billing is now the official billing method of Rhode Island College. It is reliable, convenient and provides faster and easier service for students and parents - and is more environmentally friendly than paper billing. 

Students will be sent an email when an E-Bill is available for viewing. This email is sent only to the student's official RIC email address. Students may also give access to parents to view their E-Bills and/or make e-payments by setting them up as authorized users. All enrolled students will receive an E-Bill.

Ways to Pay Your Bill

  • Electronic Payment: Through electronic payment option, you can pay by credit card, e-check or using your RIC funds card. Credit Cards will have a 2.75% convenience fee added to the transaction. There is no fee for electronic check processing or payment using RIC Funds card.
  • Mail a Check: Please include a printed copy of your bill with your check and mail to:

  • In-Person Payment (Cash or Check): You must pay in person by cash or check at the Bursar's Office during regular business hours. The Bursar's Office is located in Building 4 on East Campus. 

Late Fee: A $50 late fee will be assessed to all past due balances.

Certain RI residents may be eligible for fee waivers including those receiving unemployment benefits, senior citizens (at least 60 years old), and disabled veterans. Members of the RI National Guard may apply for a waiver through the STEP program by contacting their TING commander. Waiver students may not register for classes until the last day before classes begin. 

Courses Not Eligible for Waiver Consideration

Courses in which instructional costs are directly affected by the number of students enrolled are not eligible for tuition waiver. For example: student teaching, applied music, independent study, some continuing education courses, and some courses with clinical requirements and internships.

Enrolled Students

Students have a one-week add/drop period in which to adjust their schedules each summer session. A 100% refund of tuition and fees is granted for courses dropped during this period. Drops after this period will not be eligible for a refund of tuition or fees. 

Withdrawn Students

Students who officially withdraw from all classes for a summer session shall be entitled to a refund of tuition based upon their official date of withdrawal.

Please note: fees are nonrefundable after the first week of class.

Financial aid for Summer Sessions is available from three federal programs:

  • Pell Grants (undergraduates only)
  • Direct Loans
  • Work-Study

These programs are restricted to students accepted to degree programs and eligible certificate programs. Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid. Visiting students matriculated at other institutions should check with the financial aid office at their home school regarding the possibility of receiving financial aid under a consortium agreement.
