Professor Aho was a faculty member at RIC for eighteen years, from 1977-1995.

While at RIC he had 14 scholarly articles published in refereed journals, and received a National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellowship For College Teachers in 1983 to conduct research in Trinidad and Tobago, where he had previously taught for a year, and received several research grants from RIC.

He served on several college committees at RIC, chairing some, and was active in the community, organizing the Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Heritage Association of RI in 1981, among other volunteer activities.

He brought to RIC for performances a talented dance company from Trinidad and Tobago, and a famed calypso singer. ​​​​
