Graduate Assistant Department of Biology
2 Full-Time (20 hours a week)
Duties and Responsibilities
These duties are performed weekly throughout the fall and spring semesters, in support of
introductory level labs (BIOL 100, 111, 112, and 202, 204), upper division classes such as
as Genetics (BIOL 314), Cellular & Molecular Biology (BIOL 320), and other courses
as need arises. Graduate Assistants work under the direction of tenured/tenure-track faculty
Faculty members and the Biology Department Laboratory Coordinator.
Qualifications
- BS or BA in Biology or a similar field
- familiarity with undergraduate biology labs
- knowledge of chemical principles and math competency
- good decision-making skills and self-discipline
- ability to work as part of a team
Learning Opportunities
While participating in this Graduate Assistantship, a student will
- learn basic logistics of running different types of Biology labs
- gain experience in biology lab techniques, pedagogy, and classroom organization
- communicate effectively with peers, undergraduate students, and faculty members
- work as part of a team that enables the department to offer meaningful, experiential
- learning as a key component of Biology courses.
The skills of management, organization, teaching, and communication are relevant for
a variety of careers, including teaching, academic research, industry, and healthcare.
Faculty-student interactions during the GA experience can lead to strong letters of
recommendation or long-term mentoring relationships. Peer interactions can provide
a sense of community that supports potential for success in the graduate program.
