Graduate Assistant Multilingual Learner Programming
1 Part-Time Position (10 hours a week)
Primary Purpose
The Office of Professional Studies and Continuing Education is hiring one part-time graduate assistant (GA) position to assist with the various Multilingual Learner (MLL) programming at RIC: ESL Intensive Program (on-campus and at the Central Falls Hub) and Project ExCEL. This position will support program coordinators as well as student staff members & interns. This GA will also carry out administrative duties, lead and support ESL classes, and generally support work related to MLLs in degree and non-degree programs at RIC.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Program Coordinator on campus with administrative duties
- Assist Program Coordinator at the Central Falls Hub with administrative duties
- Co-lead an ESL class of adult MLLs
- Collaborate and oversee student staff members and student interns
- Mentor MLLs in degree programs at RIC
- Provide support to MLLs in community programs at RIC
- Manage email and text communication with prospective students (communication may be in a variety of languages)
- Support outreach and other information sessions
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Accepted degree candidate enrolled full-time in the plan of study (minimum of 6 credits; maximum of 9 credits);
- Bilingual applicants strongly recommended to apply.
- Interest in being an ally to the bilingual and bicultural learner experience is required.
- Background in general education, ESL / MLL / bilingual education (preferred but not required).
- Professional & reliable communication
- Detail-oriented
- Proactive and creative with problem-solving and anticipating students’ needs
- Ability to work both independently and productively as part of a team;
- Ability to commit to a set schedule (some flexibility)
- Effective oral and written communication skills
Learning Opportunities
This position will enhance the professional skills of any graduate student with an interest in program and curricular development and evaluation, community engagement, and higher education administration, particularly as it applies to working with MLLs. The GA would gain experience and develop skills in program coordination, leadership, classroom instruction, as well as working knowledge of aspects of community and higher education program development.
Throughout the assistantship, the GA will have access to a variety of supports from the PSCE department.
