Graduate Assistant Sociology Department
1 Full-Time Position (20 Hours a week)
Primary Purpose
The Sociology Department is seeking a full graduate assistant position to provide assistance with required research methods, Writing in the Disciplines, and Senior Seminar courses. The GA will provide tutoring and support to undergraduate students enrolled in these courses related to research, writing, and data/statistical analysis.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Leading review sessions for exams,
- Holding office hours for one-on-one or small-group support with writing, data collection, data analysis, and software (SPSS or similar quantitative analysis software, Dedoose or similar qualitative analysis software),
- Mentoring students in research design and data collection,
- Leading a class or lab session, with support from the course instructor,
- Assisting instructors with grading lab and writing assignments and providing feedback on student drafts, after appropriate draining, and
- Ancillary duties include proctoring make-up exams, giving an exam if a professor is ill or attending a conference, supporting departmental scholarship needs, helping to represent the department at recruitment events, reviewing course materials, and other departmental teaching-related assistance
The GA will work a 20-hour scheduled week with a mix of daytime and evening hours determined in consultation with the Director of the MA in Justice Studies and will work primarily in the Sociology Department in Gaige Hall.
Qualifications
Graduate Assistants are required to have completed coursework in social science research methods and statistics, preferably as they apply to sociology or justice studies and including experience with data analysis software, and strong writing skills. Preferred qualifications include working on research projects with a faculty member or as part of a professional or volunteer position; conducting independent research in an Honors, McNair, or related project; experience using SPSS and Dedoose or related software; and experience in tutoring or other client support.
