Learn how to harness the latest game-changing technology along with other industry-relevant skills in RIC's Artificial Intelligence Program. This hands-on program balances the technical knowledge needed to innovate with the business understanding necessary to integrate AI effectively into an organization.
We're thrilled that you're interested in Rhode Island College and we want to make sure that nothing stands in your way of pursuing a RIC degree. Just let us know how we can help you with your next steps.
Understand the courses you’ll take, the curriculum requirements to meet, how you’ll progress through the program, and the concepts you’ll gain mastery of. This program also offers two minor program options. Get the detailed information you’re looking for.
The BS in Artificial Intelligence program at Rhode Island College is housed within the Institute for Cybersecurity & Emerging Technologies, a regional center of excellence that provides education, programming, and research to help develop Rhode Island’s cybersecurity and AI industries.
We prepare you to serve a global need – filling the widening AI workforce skills gap. You’ll learn to design, responsibly implement and ethically evaluate machine learning models with practical applications.
“Our goal is to skill-up those professionals who are already working in IT [information technology] and to train new cybersecurity and AI workers who are entering the workforce from RIC.”
The Age of AI is shaping our future. Are you ready for it?
Their AI-powered app propelled them to victory.
In the program's first two years, you build a strong foundation in computer science and data science. You learn computer programming, data structures, and algorithms. These core courses provide the skills and knowledge you need to construct AI models. You also learn a variety of statistical tools and how to responsibly implement AI in a variety of business domains. These skills prepare you to evaluate the training data used to build models and critique the performance of more advanced AI models used in later courses.
Your third year in the program involves studying the foundation of artificial intelligence through courses in traditional artificial intelligence and machine learning. You practice each step in the machine learning process as you build your own functional machine learning models. These technical courses are accompanied by an important course in social and ethical issues in technology. In this course, you address the social and ethical issues created by using computers, AI, and other digital technologies, the problems solved by technology, and learn about professional responsibilities.
In your fourth year, you explore natural language processing and learn how human language is translated into a form machine learning models can use. In the computer vision course, you learn to manipulate and analyze digital images, extract features from images, and use machine learning to classify and detect objects in images. The reinforcement learning course gives you an opportunity to understand how autonomous vehicles learn. Additionally, there are courses that cover AI in games and robotics. Immerse yourself in a well-rounded education and be part of a pioneering program in the region, setting the standard for Al education and opening doors to exclusive opportunities!
Upon the completion of this program, students will be able to:
We also offer minors in Artificial Intelligence and Application of Artificial Intelligence. Declaring a minor allows you to explore other areas of interest and make interdisciplinary connections. Minor areas at RIC complement and reinforce all major areas of study. By declaring a minor, you can set yourself apart as a candidate for job, internship and volunteer opportunities.
The Minor in Artificial Intelligence addresses the growing importance of AI technologies across various sectors, from healthcare to finance and from environmental management to entertainment. This interdisciplinary approach equips students with a foundational understanding of AI principles, machine learning algorithms, data analysis, and ethical considerations, enabling them to apply these skills in their major field of study or future career paths. As AI continues to shape the future of work, an AI minor not only enhances employability by meeting the increasing demand for AI-literate professionals but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making in the face of technological advancements.
Artificial Intelligence Minor Course Requirements
The Minor in Application of Artificial Intelligence focuses on the use of AI in business and research, thereby making it applicable and accessible to a broad range of students. Whereas the AI Minor gives students the tools and technical skills necessary to build and train AI models, the Application of AI Minor prepares students to use AI tools responsibly and ethically in the workplace. It also provides students with an understanding of the technical issues behind the implementation of AI models so that they can knowledgeably discuss the risks and opportunities of integrating AI into business workflows.
