Graduate Assistant New Student Programs

Full-Time / 20 hours

Primary Purpose

The Graduate Assistantship for New Student Programs is a full-time (20 hours) semester long, or academic year appointment in the New Student Program Office at Rhode Island College. Under the general supervision of the Director of New Student Programs, this position will provide an array of experiences, including: transition program planning, leadership development, workshop facilitation, assessment, and undergraduate student advising. Stipend of $3,150 / tuition waiver for fall, spring, and one summer. Professional development opportunities at workshops may be available.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • promote student involvement and new student programs (Oral/Written Communication)
  • with the Director of New Student Programs Serve as support to senior and returning orientation staff to provide guidance on program planning and implementation, recruitment and selection process for orientation staff (Teamwork/Collaboration & Critical Thinking and Problem Solving)
  • assist in the preparation and maintenance of appropriate periodic/special operations reports and surveys (Information Technology Application)
  • develop and provide leadership for the programmatic initiative related to new student programming, including but not limited to such areas as orientation & transition for new students, and training elements for student leaders from first semester to second semester, and from first year to second year (Oral/Written Communication, Teamwork/Collaboration/Leadership)
  • work with staff to develop and implement assessment outcomes for workshops and programs. Collect and compile evaluation data from all Orientation events (Oral/Written Communication & Leadership) 
  • supervise first year events and/or facilities as assigned to ensure compliance with college policies and procedures (Professionalism and Work Ethic)
  • assist with hiring and recruiting of Orientation Leader Staff (Leadership & Career Management)
  • support New Student Programs in its efforts towards improved assessment, diversity programs, leadership development, and programming (Information Technology & Career Management)
  • coordinate special projects as assigned. Opportunities for projects in personal areas of interest available (Career Management)
  • perform other duties as assigned by the staff and assume additional responsibilities within the scope of the position as required. Provide support for virtual special events and functions that occur (Career Management)

Qualifications

  • background or interest new student programs, program planning, implementation and evaluation
  • ability to work with a diverse student population
  • attention to detail and an enjoyment of evaluation and research
  • strong organization, communication, and leadership skills
  • ability to serve as a role model for undergraduate students
  • competence in technology; proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • highly motivated, enthusiastic, and outgoing
  • possess and have demonstrated past leadership experience 
  • understanding of the value of a co-curricular experience
  • ability to work 20 hours a week. Flexibility may be available to accommodate some remote work if necessary
  • must be enrolled in a Graduate program at RIC
