Graduate Assistant for Student Activities, Programming and Fraternity and Sorority Life

1 Full-Time, 20 Hours/Week

Primary Purpose

The Full-Time (20 hours/week) Graduate Assistant for Student Activities – Programming & Fraternity and Sorority Life, under the overall direction of the Director of the Student Union, will provide support for the student activities program provided by the Student Union, which falls within the Department of Student Life and Division of Student Success. The Graduate Assistant will assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of events, programs and activities pertaining to Programming, Fraternity and Sorority Life and various student activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • coordinate various on and off campus events
  • reserve spaces, order services and advertise events 
  • mentor student workers and build their programming skill sets
  • staff events and assist with setup, breakdown and inventory program related supplies
  • assist in the tracking of student participation and engagement
  • attend weekly 1:1 update meeting with supervisor
  • plan and implement series-based programming (RIC Trips, Trivia, Café series)
  • select trip destinations, plan all trip logistics, coordinate ticketing, and provide on-site management and supervision of trips
  • utilize social media before, during and after events to promote, engage and interact with the student body
  • communicate with vendors when booking services, novelties, programs, etc. 
  • assist with large scale campus events sponsored by Student Activities and other campus departments
  • assist all fraternities and sororities with event planning logistics (booking space on campus, reviewing a budget, identifying roles and responsibilities, etc.)
  • co-advise, develop and facilitate the planning for fraternity and sorority programs including but not limited to, New Member Summit, Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards, Greek Week etc.
  • assist with chapter leadership support as needed
  • assist with recruitment and intake efforts when appropriate
  • attend regular council meetings and coordinate meetings with council leadership
  • fulfill other duties as assigned
  • start in August prior to semester start
  • maintain 20 hours per week office hours
  • some evening and weekend work required

Qualifications

The graduate assistant must be admitted to a graduate degree program at Rhode Island. Experience with workshop facilitation, event planning, student involvement, leadership programs, social media, advertising, RI College campus involvement and assessment is preferred. Candidates must be well organized, have the ability to relate well with students and must communicate effectively, orally, and in writing. Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and social media is preferred. You do not need to have knowledge of fraternities and sororities or have been affiliated.
